Project Location: Guernsey, Channel Islands
Three Continuing Care Wards built for the States of Guernsey Board of Health, providing 60 individual bedrooms with associated communal facilities. The building forms were developed with sensitivity to eight mature oak trees on the site, with foundation design, building shape and rainwater collection all designed to reduce the impact of the development on the trees and enhance their opportunities for long-term recovery. Deep overhangs provide solar shading and enclosure to help the domesticity of the environment. Long rooflights bring light deep into the building, creating wells of daylight at stopping places to aid orientation. Soft colours help to create a calm, relaxed atmosphere, exposed timber details and soft furnishings helping to create a tactile, pleasant atmosphere.
Designed in employment with the States of Guernsey Technical Services.
